Tracey Mill – House and workplace for 400 years
It is believed that the original mill cottage was built at the beginning of the 17th century or even earlier. At that time the Mill was a separate building from the house.
During the 19th century the house was re-fronted and extended and it was probably during this period that the house was joined to The Mill itself.
Down through the centuries the building has been known by many names and its ownership has passed through several hands. Historically the mill was part of the Lordship and Manor of Honiton and was rented out. The Manor of Honiton was split up and sold at auction in London in 1869. In 1889 the Mill again changed hands and was purchased by Mr Neumann, owner of Tracey House and Estate, Awliscombe and thus became known as Tracey Mill.
The Tracey Estate finally relinquished control of the buildings in 1965 when they were sold to a private individual. Since that time it has been used as an Antiques store, a Lawn Mower repair business and latterly as a Trout Farm.
