The Tour of Britain Cycle race comes close to Tracey Mill

The start of stage five will see the riders assemble in the vibrant cathedral city of Exeter. A thriving city and the cultural heart of the South West, hosting a year-round programme of vibrant events and with a rich history spanning more than 2,000 years from Roman times. Today Exeter combines a wealth of visitor attractions and architectural splendour with a bountiful array of shops, restaurants, bars and live music venues.

Exeter is a cycle friendly city and cycling is a great way of getting around! Whether as a recreational activity or just as a means of transport, cycling is free, fun and convenient! The combination of flat, traffic-free routes in the city and leisure routes in the surrounding areas, such as the Exe Estuary Trail, allows people of all ages and abilities to enjoy this healthy activity.

The Exe Estuary Trail

Joining our start and finish venues, Exeter and Exmouth, is the spectacular Exe Estuary Trail cycle route and footpath. This year in Devon, you can watch both the start of The Tour of Britain race and the finish on your bicycle!

The mostly off road trail follows the River Exe from the Quayside in Exeter through Topsham, Exton and Lympstone to finish by the sea in Exmouth. This route provides an exciting opportunity to experience cycling or walking around the entire Exe Estuary, appreciating the wildlife and passing through some beautiful riverside towns and villages steeped in maritime history. AA snip at just 12 miles you can take the short way round leisurely compared to the gruelling 112 miles the professionals will be racing!
